Jess Buter
foUNDER

Hi, I’m Jess Buter (she/her), and I’m so glad you’re here. I started Golden Counseling to create a space where you can feel safe, heard, and supported as we work through life’s challenges together.

My 10+ years in the mental health field has taken me to Chicago, Denver, Cincinnati and now Salt Lake City, where I’ve helped people from all walks of life. These experiences have taught me the importance of individualized care and how to create an environment that fosters growth.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Grand Valley State University and a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of the Cumberlands.

When I’m not working, I love spending time outdoors—whether it’s hiking, snowboarding, or taking walks with my wife and our golden retriever. I’m also a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community and I aim to spread love and acceptance in all areas of my life.

Hazel
Therapy dog

Meet Hazel! Her gentle nature and calming presence make her the perfect candidate for a therapy dog. My goal is to train Hazel to provide emotional support, helping clients feel at ease during therapy sessions.

MY APPROACH

I specializes in queer identity development, relationship and family challenges, life and faith transitions, as well as depression and anxiety that may arise from these experiences. My intentions are to treat each individual uniquely with a variety of techniques.

I know it can be hard to take that first step toward seeking help, but I’m here to walk alongside you, offering guidance and support. Let’s work together to find the path that’s right for you.

  • Solutions Focused Therapy (SFT) is a forward-looking therapy that aims to identify solutions to resolve existing problems. You will identify your strengths and skills, and set achievable goals that can lead to meaningful life changes.

  • Person-Centered Therapy aims to empower clients to explore their thoughts and feelings. Clients will go through the process of self-discovery, growth, and healing, with the ultimate goal of leading an authentic and fulfilling life.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) aims to change negative thought patterns and behaviors through a goal-oriented approach. We will work on establishing various coping strategies, such as mindfulness techniques, relaxation exercises, and assertiveness training.

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) focuses on improving client relationships by managing unwanted, intense emotions. By incorporating mindfulness, emotional regulation, and interpersonal skills, clients are empowered to make changes that benefit their lives.
